Information for Parents
If you are a parent or legal guardian applying for Crime Victims Compensation (CVC) on behalf of a minor child, you may file a claim to help cover expenses resulting from the crime. If your child’s case is found eligible, CVC can reimburse medical, counseling, and other crime-related out-of-pocket costs. To qualify, the crime must be reported to law enforcement in a timely manner, and both the victim and claimants are expected to cooperate fully with law enforcement and legal proceedings. Please note that CVC is considered a payor of last resort, meaning all other available resources must be exhausted before CVC benefits can be applied.
Other important things to keep in mind:
- If you applied on behalf of a minor or deceased victim, it’s important to note that you will be the Claimant for the case moving forward. This means you will be the primary point of contact for the case.
- Applying for assistance from CVCP does not guarantee that you will receive benefits. Our Program has specific eligibility criteria, and we carefully review each application to ensure it meets these criteria. If you have any questions about the eligibility requirements, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
- No Arrest Required: An arrest or conviction of the offender is not required to apply for or receive an award, though a crime must have occurred against the child.
- Payer of Last Resort: CVC requires you to bill private insurance, Medicaid, or other health coverage first. It covers remaining out-of- pocket costs like co-pay or acts as primary coverage if the child has no insurance.
- It is important to keep CVCP informed if your address changes. This will ensure that we can stay in touch and continue to provide you with case updates in a timely and meaningful way.
- CVCP is dedicated to offering access to individuals with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) and persons with other accessibility needs. CVCP and the Idaho Industrial Commission have bi-lingual staff to assist Spanish speakers. We primarily rely on Language Line for interpretation services to help communicate in other languages. If you or others need language assistance or assistance with other accessibility needs, please call 208-334-6080.
- Parents should apply to the Idaho CVCP as soon as possible after a crime occurs. While trauma can resurface throughout a child’s life, securing these funds early ensures access to critical mental health resources up to the program’s maximum limits.
